Cameron Station Community Association
By Andrew Hill, Board President
and Tricia Hemel, Communications Committee Chair
Cameron Station is a community built on connection, and communication is at the center of everything we do. With nearly 5,000 residents, the need for timely, clear, and engaging information is essential. From day-to-day updates to long-range planning, we use every available channel to ensure neighbors are informed, connected, and included.
OOur communications strategy begins with The Connection. Delivered every Friday by email, it is the central thread that keeps residents up to date. Each issue provides timely reminders about events, committee meetings, Board decisions, volunteer opportunities, and city initiatives. Trusted and consistent, The Connection has become the heartbeat of Cameron Station, ensuring neighbors never miss what matters most.
Supporting The Connection is The Compass, our long-standing community newsletter. Published regularly as a blog on our website, The Compass tells the stories of our neighborhood, highlights resident achievements, and dives into topics that enrich community life. Each December, a special printed edition of The Compass is mailed to every home, offering a full year-in-review, celebrating accomplishments, and looking ahead to the future.
Our website is the central hub for community information. Continuously updated, it provides governance documents, meeting minutes, forms, event calendars, and archives of The Compass. It is a comprehensive, easy-to-navigate resource where residents know they can always find accurate information.
Social media allows us to engage in real time. Our Facebook and Instagram pages highlight community activities, share updates from the City of Alexandria, and showcase resident-submitted photos. This interactive platform fosters pride and participation, giving residents a space to both receive and contribute information.
Photography is woven into every aspect of our communications. Volunteers capture moments from events, seasonal changes, and everyday life in Cameron Station. These photos are featured across The Compass, The Connection, the website, and social media, telling the story of our community visually and vibrantly.
Welcoming new neighbors is another cornerstone of our communications strategy. The Welcome Subcommittee provides each resident with resources to help them feel at home, while our twice-yearly Meet & Greet events connect new arrivals directly with board members, committee chairs, and fellow neighbors. These gatherings foster personal connections that complement our digital outreach.
What makes Cameron Station’s communications truly effective is the way all channels work together. A paving project update, a City Council meeting of interest, or a holiday party will appear in The Connection, on the website, through social media, and in The Compass, often reinforced with signage around the community. This layered approach ensures that residents are informed, engaged, and connected to life both inside Cameron Station and throughout Alexandria.
We also monitor the effectiveness of all communications through open and click rates, website traffic, social media impressions, and resident feedback, using these insights to refine clarity, tone, and reach across every platform.
Communication is not an afterthought in Cameron Station. It is a deliberate and ongoing commitment to transparency, inclusion, and unity. For these reasons, we are proud to submit Cameron Station for the 2025 Communicator of the Year Award.
