Cameron Station Community Association
By Andrew Hill, Board President
and Tricia Hemel, Communications Committee Chair
Cameron Station, a vibrant community of more than 1,700 households in Alexandria’s West End, has always been defined by its spirit of service and generosity. At the heart of our community lies a deep commitment to reaching beyond our neighborhood and supporting those in need across Alexandria. Our residents give their time, energy, and resources to programs that strengthen families, support children, improve our environment, and provide a helping hand during times of need.
Our communications strategy keeps service opportunities front and center, with announcements featured in The Connection weekly email, The Compass blog, and its year-end printed edition. These platforms make volunteer efforts highly visible, easy to join, and consistently celebrated throughout the year.
Our longest-running tradition, the Adopt-A-Family program, now in its twenty-fifth year, exemplifies the generosity that defines Cameron Station. Coordinated with Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School, this initiative provides Christmas celebrations for families who might otherwise go without. Residents and local businesses adopt families, purchasing everything from basic household goods to children’s books and toys. Similarly, Operation Gobble Gobble, also in partnership with Tucker, ensures that one hundred families receive $100 grocery gift certificates for Thanksgiving meals each year, often surpassing that number through the generosity of neighbors.
Cameron Station also embraces education and literacy. Dozens of residents participate in the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium, working one-on-one with elementary students to improve reading skills. Others contribute time, donations, and leadership to the Friends of Beatley Library, helping raise more than $66,000 in 2025 to support author events, children’s programs, and library improvements. Our Little Free Libraries, installed within the community, continue to inspire reading and sharing among neighbors of all ages. In addition, residents actively support the Samuel W. Tucker Elementary PTA, joining in fundraising efforts such as Restaurant Nights that provide financial support for school programs and student needs.
We serve in ways large and small. The StepALIVE! Walkathon brings together a Cameron Station team each October to support ALIVE!, the city’s largest safety-net organization. Our volunteers also participate in the City of Alexandria’s Eco-City Festival and work alongside the Friends of Cameron Station Parks to preserve the natural beauty surrounding our neighborhood. In the winter, neighbors mobilize to clear snow for those who cannot, ensuring safe passage to work, school, or medical care. In 2025, we expanded our reach with two Goodwill Collection Days that donated more than 8,000 pounds of goods and a Community Bike Drive that collected 21 bicycles and accessories for the Velocity Bicycle Cooperative, extending our impact to families across Alexandria.
Starting in November 2025, Cameron Station introduced a new initiative, the Give & Take Pantry, a simple, resident-driven way to share nonperishable pantry items with neighbors and reduce food waste. Located in the Cameron Club, the pantry invites residents to donate or take items as needed, fostering an atmosphere of generosity and support. Each Friday, remaining items are delivered to a local food bank, ensuring nothing goes to waste and extending our community’s care to those beyond our gates.
Together, these efforts reflect the heart of Cameron Station. We are not just neighbors but partners in service, united by a shared commitment to helping others. From providing meals and gifts to children to advancing literacy to protecting our environment, residents demonstrate compassion in action. Beyond our organized initiatives, we also recognize the many individuals who give generously of their time in countless ways, from supporting local food kitchens and animal shelters to serving on our Board, committees, and Civic Association. Their dedication strengthens the bonds within our neighborhood and defines Cameron Station as a community built on kindness and purpose.
